SUMMARY
With ReShade's OpenXR layer enabled, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 crashes every time it enters VR when SteamVR is the active OpenXR runtime. Disabling the layer stops the crash. With PimaxXR as the runtime, MSFS 2024 runs fine with the layer enabled. DCS World runs correctly with the layer enabled on SteamVR.
This setup worked before MSFS 2024 Sim Update 7 (1.9.18.0, 14 October 2026) and Sim Update 7.1 (1.9.21.0, 24 October 2026). Sim Update 7 included a new openxr_loader.dll.
SYSTEM
- Game: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, version 1.9.21.0 (Microsoft Store / Xbox app), DirectX 12
- ReShade: 6.8.0 (latest release from reshade.me), installed for DCS World only. The OpenXR layer (ReShade64_XR.json) is registered globally.
- The crash also occurred with the previous ReShade build (dated 28/02/2026) before updating.
- OpenXR runtime: SteamVR 2.18.4
- Headset: Pimax Crystal Super Micro OLED, using the SBoys3 native SteamVR driver 1.3.0
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, driver 621.01
- Windows: build 26100 (dxgi.dll 10.0.26100.9711)
- Other implicit OpenXR layers enabled: OpenKneeboard, Virtual Desktop OculusXR compatibility layer
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
- Set SteamVR as the active OpenXR runtime.
- Enable "crosire's ReShade post-processing injector for 64-bit" (SteamVR > Settings > OpenXR > Manage OpenXR API Layers).
- Launch MSFS 2024 and switch to VR.
Result: MSFS crashes to desktop on entering VR, every time.
Expected: MSFS enters VR normally.
CRASH DETAILS (Windows Event Viewer, Application Error, Event ID 1000) - identical on every crash:
Faulting application name: FlightSimulator2024.exe, version: 1.9.21.0
Faulting module name: dxgi.dll, version: 10.0.26100.9711
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dxgi.dll
Exception code: 0x80000003
Fault offset: 0x000000000008fab2
TEST RESULTS
- SteamVR runtime + ReShade layer ON = crash on entering VR
- SteamVR runtime + ReShade layer OFF = works
- PimaxXR runtime + ReShade layer ON = works
NOTES
- No ReShade files are installed in the MSFS 2024 game folder. An earlier per-game install, deployed by a third-party installer, was removed, and the crash persists.
- MSFS 2024 is not listed in ReShadeApps.ini (which contains only DCS World), yet the OpenXR layer still loads into MSFS.
- ReShade.log from a crashing session is available on request.
Current workaround: disabling the ReShade layer in SteamVR before launching MSFS, and re-enabling it for DCS.
Thanks for any help.
